Description

Backup and Restore is the process of duplicating data and storing it in a secure place in case of a lost or damaged device and then restoring that data to the original/replacement device.

The purpose of this article is to help associates determine what is personal data and what to consider before the Backup & Restore to reduce data loss.

Company does not support or take responsibility for any lost personal data. Company is not responsible to store, backup or restore personal data.

What are examples for personal Data?

  • Personal email accounts (Apple.com, Gmail, yahoo, etc…)
  • Personal contacts/Photos/Videos
  • Personal local Files (Excel, Word, PDF, etc…)
  • All Non-corporate App & their App data
    • e.g. WhatsApp Chats & Media, Bank apps, Games, Pandora, Netflix, etc.
    • Personal MultiFactor Authentication apps (Banking TAN generators, Google authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, etc…)

Why do I need to backup personal data?

When it is required to perform a factory wipe, all data on the device gets deleted. Sometimes it is not possible, to use a full device restore with iTunes or iCloud. The user has to take actions to make sure, personal data is backed up in another way. All data, that cannot get backed up in other ways will be lost in this process.

Can I use iTunes or iCloud to restore my personal data when a full restore is not possible?

You can partly make use of iTunes or iCloud backups. Data that can be backed up / transferred with iTunes or iCloud without full restore:

  • Contacts
  • Calendars
  • Notes
  • iCloud Photos (Caution! Locally stored pictures must be transferred to iCloud or any other storage to prevent loss!)
  • iMessages
  • Voice Memos
  • text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages
  • Health data

If all your personal photos/videos are already stored in iCloud or another cloud storage, they will be retrievable.

What do I need to do before factory reset or return a corporate device?

  1. Identify all your personal data
  2. Find a possibility to backup this data a. Backup to Personal Cloud storage (Examples: Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc..) b. Backup to Personal storage (Examples: external hard drive, USB, NAS, etc..)
  3. Confirm that all personal data is accessible from a different device(Personal Computer(Mac/PC), Mobile device(phone/tablet))
